The simplest trick for a phone-free dinner with friends: stack your phones, and the first to touch theirs pays. Classic rules, plus a few twists.

Made by the team behind Snitch. You don't need any app for this, just a table and some friends. How we write these guides

The phone stack is the simplest trick for a phone-free dinner with friends. Here’s how to play, and a few twists.

The classic rules

  1. When you sit down, everyone stacks their phone face down in the middle of the table.
  2. First person to touch their phone before the bill comes pays for the table, or a forfeit you agree.
  3. If nobody touches theirs, everyone pays their own way.

Variations

  • Cheaper version: whoever cracks first buys dessert or the next round.
  • The washing-up rule: at home, first to grab their phone washes up.
  • Emergency pass: one free check each for anything urgent, but you have to say why out loud.
  • Long game: keep score across a month. The worst offender hosts the next dinner.

Why it works

It’s public, it’s a bit of fun, and there’s a small cost to breaking it. Those three things work far better than willpower.

Take it beyond dinner

The stack only works when you’re together. For the rest of the week, Snitch works the same way: your group shares a daily time pot, going over costs everyone, and there’s a monthly Rot Day for a guilt-free break.
