Rot Days: Why Planned Breaks Beat Cold Turkey

Every digital detox we tried ended in a six-hour scroll. A planned day off each month works better. What a rot day is, why it helps, and how to plan one.

Every digital detox we tried went the same way. Three perfect days. Then a rubbish Wednesday, one “quick” scroll, and suddenly it’s six hours later and the whole thing feels pointless.

So we built the opposite into Snitch: a day off.

What’s a rot day?

One planned day a month when the rules don’t apply. Scroll in bed. Binge a series. Lie on the sofa and rot, guilt-free.

Why it helps (in our experience)

1. All-or-nothing rules snap. If one slip means you’ve “failed”, it’s tempting to give up completely. A planned break means a lazy day isn’t a failure; it’s part of the plan.

2. You stop bargaining. “I’ll just have 10 minutes” every day adds up. Knowing a proper rot day is coming makes it easier to say no today.

3. It keeps it human. Moderation, not abstinence. Phones aren’t evil, and you don’t need to live in a cabin.

How to plan one

  • Pick a day with nothing on. A rainy Sunday is perfect.
  • Tell your group, so nobody snitches on you.
  • Enjoy it. Properly.
  • Back to normal the next day.

How it works in Snitch

Once a month you can take a Rot Day: your apps are unblocked for 24 hours, no guilt. Then they lock back up as normal.
