How to Stop Checking Your Phone First Thing in the Morning

Alarm goes off, you grab your phone, and twenty minutes later you're still scrolling in bed. Six ways to break the morning check, most of them free.

Alarm goes off. You grab your phone to switch it off. Twenty minutes later you’re still in bed, scrolling through things you don’t care about. Here’s how to break that.

1. Get your phone out of reach

The single biggest fix. Charge it in another room, or at least across the bedroom.

2. Buy a proper alarm clock

If your phone is your alarm, you’ll always pick it up first. A basic alarm clock costs less than a takeaway.

3. Schedule a morning lock

  • iPhone: extend Downtime (on iOS 27, Screen Time Schedule) to end an hour after you wake up.
  • Android: set Focus mode to run until, say, 8am.

Keep only calls, messages and maps allowed. (Step by step in how to block apps at bedtime.)

4. Swap in something easy

Pick a tiny replacement habit you can do half-asleep: open the curtains, drink a glass of water, put the kettle on. Your hand needs something to do.

5. Turn off overnight notifications

If there are 37 notifications waiting, you’ll want to check them. Use Do Not Disturb or a Sleep focus overnight.

6. Make a pact with friends

Agree with a friend or partner that neither of you opens social apps before a set time. Snitch makes this automatic: your group shares a daily time pot, and focus hours can lock your apps for the first hour of the day, with the group’s OK needed to unlock.

Start small

Don’t go from 30 minutes of morning scrolling to zero. Try phone-free until you’re out of bed. Then until after breakfast.
